White Horse and Stag on Mormond Hill PDF Print E-mail

Mormond Hill is the highest point in Buchan.  On the south west side is the Strichen White Horse. The horse is constructed of quartz on Mormond hill. It is 162' long by 126' high.  The horse was cleaned in 1937, 1949, 1968, 1970, 1994 and again in July 2008.

There are many different stories as to the origin of the horse. One story and the most widely accepted is that the horse was cut by Captain Fraser (family of the laird of Strichen) whose horse was shot from under him in a Dutch Battle of Gilzen  in 1794. A Sergeant Henderson of New Deer offered him his horse but he was shot dead during the changeover. On his return Captain Fraser cut the horse as a memorial to him.

On the East of Mormond Hill is the White Stag. A figure of a stag made out of quartz stones; recorded as being cut in 1870 by Mr F W Cordiner of Cortes Estate, near Fraserburgh, to commemorate his wedding.  Cortes House now provides 4 star self catering accommodation
