Drinnie's Wood Observatory PDF Print E-mail
The Observatory was built in 1845 by Admiral George Ferguson, the fifth laird of Pitfour as an equine observatory. Folklore says that the Admiral erected the tower to watch his stables as his horses practiced for races. Whatever it was built for, it now offers an amazing view of Buchan for miles in every direction.

The tower is constructed of grey granite with the lower section painted white. A large door at the bottom takes you into the tower, where a spiral staircase takes you to the top. There are eight windows, each with a map underneath to tell you what you are looking at.

The tower fell into disrepair during the 20th century, as with many such buildings. Banff and Buchan District Council purchased it in 1993 and spent some £75,000 on restoring it to a safe and impressive attraction. It was officially opened by Councillor William R. Cruickshank, Convenor, on the 30th September 1993.

To get there from Peterhead, head west to Mintlaw and go straight on at Mintlaw roundabout. At the junction for Fetterangus (just after Aden Park as you leave Mintlaw) turn right and follow the road. At the junction just before Fetterangus grave yard turn left (sharp turn) and proceed up the hill until you reach the car park on your left hand side. Follow the forest track until you reach the access path for the Observatory.

There are picnic benches at the car park and at the base of the observatory. There is also a dog hitching post at the bottom of the tower.
